Google TV is a whole new experience in the television industry. It efficiently combines the conventional television that you are well familiar with and uses it regularly with the power and freedom of the internet. It is a Smart TV platform that is built-in to the television sets and provides the user with the flexibility of watching television and surfing the internet side by side.
In a recent announcement, Google stated that it is now bringing an updated version of Google Play’s movies, music and TV shows to its platform of Google TV. This update will enable the users to purchase or rent content from Google Play stores that will be built-in to the Google TV devices. Moreover, users will be able to purchase the similar content from Google Play apps store that they had previously bought from other websites. For Spanish speakers Dish Latino is a dedicated Spanish package.
The recently released new data from the app search firm ‘Xyologic’ gives a clear picture of the comparative success or lack of success of the platform of Google TV. The product central to the Google media has managed to attract a niche crowd, who were willing to adopt this technology. This is because of the installation base used for the applications that exclusively pertain to the Google TV platform. There are around 4.8 million applications installed exclusively for a Google TV. Amongst them, only 352,000 were downloaded by users while the remaining 4,441,000 applications were pre-installed.
Since August 2011, Xyologic has kept itself aware of the activities of Google TV. According to their observations, there are a total of 64 applications that are exclusively for the platform of Google TV. This form a total of 4,793,000 install base. These applications will be most appealing to the end users of the Google TV platform, as they have been designed and customized for use on big screens. The prevailing trends within the Google TV platform can give you a useful insight into its overall performance and health as well as the preferences of the users’ of this Google TV.
It is not surprising to note that the six applications that are pre-installed accounts for the top six applications on the basis of install base. There were 4,441,000 numbers of installations. These top six applications, all for Google TV platform, include; Napster, Pandora, CNBC, Twitter, TV channels, movies and photos. For Spanish speakers Dish Latino is a dedicated Spanish package.
The remaining four applications exclusive to the Google TV that sums up the top 10 include; Redux, CNNMoney, Maps, Motor Trend and Thuuz Sports. All four of these applications accounted for only 58,000 download or installations in the previous month.
Xyologic also makes it a point that the exclusive applications for Google TV have experienced low ratings. These ratings confirm that the users have had an underwhelming experience of using these apps, as stated on the company’s report. On the other hand, the applications that are not exclusive to the Google TV platform are experiencing higher ratings. Yet, the number of downloads of these applications are significantly low.
Amongst the applications not exclusive to the Google TV platform, the most famous ones include; Dragon, Classy Fireplace, Fly Free, Google Music, Cuevan Android, Solitaire, aVia Media Player, Buddy TV, IM+, tiny Cam Monitor Free and Fireworks-The Best Free Game.
So far, the only television manufacturers who have shipped their television sets along with the Google TV devices are Sony and LG. Both of these manufacturers have faced criticism regarding the looks of the television set, the price altogether and the quality of the Google TV itself. Yet, both of them have made a decision to continue incorporating this Google TV platform as of now.
Just as Sony and LG are constantly attempting to promote the Google TV platform, Google itself is also trying hard to do the same. Whether or not they have been successful in their attempts is yet to be determined. The only application that has improved for the users is the YouTube app.
To sum it all up, the company states that the data present in their reports is actually what most of the observers have observed. Though the Google TV is in its early days, the industry is slowly and gradually moving towards the Smart TVs, those that have different apps built-in to the devices. If Google TV wishes to succeed it will have to think smart and come up with something that will entice the users and is not already available.
