Phones and tablets have become an integral part of our lives. We spend a lot of time on smartphones checking emails, sending messages, reading eBooks etc.. So much strain on the eyes is unhealthy, especially if you are spending time on your phones at night.
There are apps for computers such as f.lux or Dimmer which aim to reduce the strain on the eyes. The two apps work in different manners though – f.lux tries to filter out certain shades of light while Dimmer simply reduces the screen brightness below allowed levels.
Although these apps aren’t available on Android, there are several alternative Android apps which work in a similar fashion. Check out the detailed review of these Android apps below.
1. Lux Lite
Lux has been available on Android for several years now. You can use this app to change your device’s brightness. It also allows you to link a specific level of lightning with a specific brightness level, so that brightness level will automatically change. This feature is similar to auto-brightness, but here you can customize every change.
Apart from this feature, it also consists of several filters, such as a red filter or a night filter. If you have root access, you can enable even more filters. It also has a paid version, which will unlock more features such as Tasker and Locale support.

2. Twilight
If you use your smartphone before going to sleep, you might notice that you have trouble sleeping. The reason is that one of the photoreceptors in your eyes which is sensitive to blue light inhibits the production of a hormone called melatonin which is necessary for sleep.

Twilight app has been specifically designed to get rid of this problem. It will change the device’s brightness according to the time, and gradually filter out the blue light from the screen after sunset. You can also create profiles to customise the filters. There is a paid version which will add more features like ability to create more than 2 profiles, customisable transition time etc.

3. C.F. Lumen
C.F. Lumen is considered to be one the best alternatives of f.lux. It can actually change the display colour and not just apply a filter on the top, but its disadvantage is it will require root access, since Android normally doesn’t provide that permission to apps.

It can not only change the colour temperature of the display according to the sun’s position by detecting your location but also comes with a variety of colour filters. Red is the default colour, but you can easily change it to other filters such as blue, gree, invert and grayscale. There is also a pro option which will unlock several features such as Tasker integration, support to start at boot up, as well as notification support.

4. EasyEyes
EasyEyes is another superb app which provides several features and also acts as a screen dimmer. It changes brightness based on Sun’s position and its temperature filter can easily replace the blue shade with warm lighting. It also allows easy integration with Tasker. You can also pay for a premium version to avail more features including removal of ads, multiple profiles etc.

5. Night Mode
This is probably the simplest application on this list, but it gets the job done. This app allows you to change your device’s brightens levels below the minimum levels allowed by the device.
It doesn’t provide any fancy filters like the other apps. It only provides an overlay filter which reduces the brightness levels. You can also check how much the brightness has reduced. You can also choose to automatically set the brightness of the device at minimum when the service is running. If you prefer simplicity, give Night Mode a try.
