Every new development in the world of technology, or specifically IT, is either met with a lot of reservation or a lot of expectation. Cloud computing burst on to the scene with phenomenal expectations mounting on its concept and over the years it has only gotten more widespread. No country or city that has access to internet and technology is disassociated with cloud computing. However, as with any other technological advancement, the question now remains whether or not cloud computing is overhyped at this stage?
In one way, cloud computing is indeed overhyped. That is predominantly because of the surmounting expectations from it. Most people look beyond the obvious benefits and anticipate for more. Having said that, it doesn’t imply that cloud computing is all hype and no substance. Cloud computing has serious benefits and also has the ability to withstand the litmus test of being a long term solution. The question truly is if it would suffer a massive phase of disillusionment or sail through rather conveniently.
Cloud computing has been predominantly categorized into three sections – infrastructure as a service, software as a service and platform as a service. At its inception, cloud computing was predominantly a concatenation of all the three but with time, software as a service and platform as a service has undergone a paradigm shift of popularity. It isn’t that they aren’t beneficial but with software as a service available to small and medium businesses today, benefits from that perspective are going to get reweighed.
Large corporations weren’t any way much wooed by these aspects hence that equation remains unaffected. Infrastructure as a service is going to remain as omnipotent and omnipresent as they are today. The luxury to have scalability of infrastructure to almost infinite extent for a mid size business would always keep cloud computing a frontrunner among the technologies that changed the world for good. Having a platform as a service which can cater to growing aspirations of reaching out to more people, getting tasks done in real time which was hitherto unthinkable would always offer the leverage to cloud computing. Furthermore, the mammoth amounts of data that is parked using cloud computing would give it a phenomenal significance for any business.
In summation, cloud computing is overhyped but it is only a natural response to a technology which has been growing in popularity. Expectations would rise and there would be a phase wherein the true benefits of cloud computing would be realized, the hype would fade away and it would continue to be a huge tool aiding operations and productivity.
