Internet.org is a website brought about by Facebook, Nokia, Qualcomm, Ericsson and Samsung. No matter how big a part of life internet has become for us, there are still many towns and villages that do not have internet access at all and where there is an access of the internet, a lot of people cannot afford it. Internet.org is a new venture by the above companies to provide internet access to these un-privileged places. Its objective is to make internet more accessible and affordable.
Facebook, being a tech company is trying its best to make the internet affordable to these people. We understand that using Facebook has its drawbacks, but too much of anything has its drawbacks. Facebook has though been better in terms of sharing useful info about the world, general knowledge, history and other developments for teenagers and connecting with long lost friends. With the internet.org on board now the connectivity of Facebook has taken to a whole new level.
- The internet will be affordable from now onwards to the underprivileged, this means the cost of the internet will be lower than before but not free.
- It is said the website will sustain a low cost of operation and this is considered a high innovation.
- The geographic conditions wouldn’t be a barrier now, to intensive access to the good speed internet.
- The ethos of Internet.org follows, “The internet is a right, not a privilege.”
- Intenet.org aims to reach internet to the remotest of areas across developing countries via mobile internet people can use on their cell phones/smart-phones.
- Creating a low bandwidth pages to be used on mobile devices anywhere on earth. To provide efficiency of data is what Facebook is right now working on.
- Ultimately, internet.org is all about access. Reaching the internet to the world not known to it. It aims to make the world feel easy and comfortable about the internet, just the way North Americans and developed city people see it.
What Facebook has in mind :
- Cheap accessibility to Facebook.com to the millions who don’t know the website yet.
- Connecting even more people and spreading/sharing information among the masses.
- Creating a global library for everyone.
- Facebook is to benefit the most, with more with more users to add to the social networking site.
Internet.org reads, “Internet.org is a global partnership between technology leaders, nonprofits, local communities and experts who are working together to bring the internet to the two thirds of the world’s population that don’t have it.”
With Zuckerberg and company leading the innovative initiative, the other companies are contributing in their own ways. The challenges are specifically; affordability, efficiency of data and access. The social development project has only been started and been working on a few weeks now and the initiative is already finding appreciation from the whole world, from them online and them who couldn’t be earlier.
