It would always be good to make sure you’re keeping up with all the new features available in the latest iOS update. Updates can make your old device seem like something new, even if it’s the same one you’ve had for a while now. If your device is on this list of compatible ones, you’re eligible to update iOS to the latest version.
Steps to Update iOS
Back up Your Device
Always take this precaution before you decide to update iOS. While you’re usually safe, if something goes wrong during the iOS update, you want to make sure you don’t lose any of your data. iOS devices can be backed up to iCloud or on iTunes on your computer.
If you’re backing up to iCloud, open your settings app and tap your name — or a direct iCloud option if you still have an older OS on your device. Tap on iCloud and then iCloud backup. There, you should see an option that says “Back up Now.” Choose that and your device will be on its way.
If you’re backing up to iTunes, connect your device to the computer with a USB cable. Open iTunes and click on the little icon of your device in the upper left-hand corner. Click “Summary.” On that screen, you should see a checkbox that says “Encrypt iPhone or iPad Backup.” If you want to make sure all your passwords and health data are backed up, make sure this is checked before you click “Back up Now.”

Make Sure You Have Enough Room
iOS 11 takes about 2 GB of space on your device. Make sure you have enough room to install it so you don’t have to start deleting apps at the last minute. If you go to the “Settings” app, tap “General” and then “About.” You should see two sections titled “Capacity” and “Available.” These will tell you how much space your phone came with, as well as what’s available now. If it’s less than 2 GB, you’ll have to start deleting some stuff.
Start the Update
Just like with backing up, you can update iOS either by just using the device or by plugging it into a computer and utilizing iTunes. While the easier way is definitely just on the device, saving the hassle of plugging it in, here’s how to do both options.

If you’re just using the device, open the “Settings” app and tap “General.” “Software Update” should be the second option. When iOS 11 appears, tap “Download” and “Install” and agree to the terms and conditions.
If you’re using iTunes, connect the device to a computer and open iTunes. Click on the small device icon in the upper left hand side of the screen. On the device summary screen, click the “Update” button when you see the iOS 11 update come up and agree to the terms and conditions.

Since it’s a completely new software update, it’ll probably take a decent amount of time to download, and the device will then reboot. Once it reboots, it will prompt you to go through some setup settings like you did when you first got your device. When this is finished, it’ll go to the home screen with the iOS 11 running.
Once the update is complete, take some time to play around with your device and explore all the new and improved features that come with it. Siri has some new tricks, you can now customize your control center and you also have the option to edit live photos, which wasn’t available before.
Keeping your phone updated helps you to use it smoothly, while also giving you the latest features and interface to enjoy. Update your phone to iOS 11 and make sure you take advantage of all the great benefits that come with it.
