Facebook has existed since 2004. Over that time, people have been posting their entire lives for their friends, families, and coworkers to see. It’s a great way to collect photos, like a digital scrapbook. Photographs are how we remember the past.
Facebook memories is a tool Facebook uses to bring up photos from the past. This tool will show you what you posted on a certain day a certain amount of years ago. For some, this is a great tool to help remind us of past events we might have forgotten.
For others, it can bring back painful memories you wish you could forget. No one wants to wake up and check their Facebook in the morning only to see something negative. This step-by-step guide will show you how to hide posts from Facebook memories and make Facebook a more positive space.
What Facebook Memories Shows and Where it’s Located
Facebook memories show a variety of different posts. Posts connected to Facebook memories include any post you have ever made, tagged posts, events, status changes, and monthly recaps.
If you want to see what kind of photos are showing up in your memories, open the Facebook app. If you tap the menu button, one of the drop-down options will be “Memories.”
The memories that will show up are for whatever day you’re looking on but in the past. For example, if you’re looking at Facebook Memories on October 1st, 2021, then the memories that show up will be for October 1st, 2020, or earlier.
How to Delete a Memory
No one else can see your memories on Facebook until you share them. Deleting memories that have popped up is really easy to do.
First, go to the Menu and the “Memories” category. There is a three-dot button in the upper right corner of the memory. Select the button and pick the “Delete” option.
Once you confirm it, the memory is permanently deleted, not the original post. You won’t see this memory on that day next year. But, you can’t undo deleting a memory so make sure you want to do it.
Turning Off Notifications
Sometimes, you don’t want to go through and delete each Facebook memory one by one. Another option you have is turning notifications off.
When you’re on the Memories page, select the Gear icon. This will take you to the Memories Settings. The notifications section will let you pick how often you want to receive memory notifications.
“All Memories” will show you new memories that pop up every day. “Highlights” will show you only special videos or collections. “None” will show you no Facebook memories alerts.
If you want to stop receiving notifications for Facebook memories, select “None.” This can be changed down the road by selecting one of the other options.
Hiding Posts from Facebook Memories
Sometimes, it can be nice to be reminded of good memories. But, there will always be those memories we want to forget. Hiding posts from Facebook memories will allow you to still see the good memories without being triggered by bad ones and make Facebook a better space.
Hiding Memories with Certain People
Friendships and relationships can end in good ways and bad ways. Sometimes, we don’t want to see any memories with those people in them so we don’t have to think of why things ended.
Under the “Memories” tab from before, select the Gear icon. Under the notifications section, there will be an option to hide memories. Select “People.”
When you select people, a bar will show up and you can type the names of the people you want memories about hidden. You can add as many people as you want to this list. If things change, you can also remove their name.
Hiding Memories with Certain Dates
It’s not always the people that cause bad memories, but dates as well. Some days we just don’t want to look back on anymore.
When you’re in the Facebook Memories Settings, underneath the “People” option will be a “Date” option.
When you select the “Date” option, you can input a specific date or a range of dates. If you have a specific day you want to forget, you can make both the start and end date the same day. If you want to forget a range of years, you can input that as well.
The great thing about doing this is you can always go back and change it. If you begin to feel like you want to see those memories again, just follow these steps and change the dates.
Hiding a Specific Post
Now and again, you just want to hide a specific post. Hiding posts from Facebook memories is a good alternative to deletion.
Find the post on your page you want to hind. When you find this post, select the three-dot icon in the upper righthand corner of the post.
Scroll past the editing options. Select the “Hide From Timeline” option. You will have to confirm that you want to hide the post from your timeline. This option can be undone, but it’s more complicated than the other options.
Delete the Post
A surefire way to prevent Facebook memories from seeing a post you made is by deleting posts from Facebook. This can be a hard decision because, for many, Facebook acts as a digital scrapbook. When you go through this process, it cannot be undone.
Find the post you want to delete and select the three-dot icon in the upper-righthand corner. Under the save post option will be the “Delete” option. Once you select the “Delete” option, you will have to confirm it.
Once confirmed, this post will be gone from Facebook forever.
