With the release of the iPhone 5 on the horizon there are a few things that Apple needs to incorporate. While Apple is by no need hurting overall, Android based phones are starting to take a 2 to 1 hold on the market. That might explain some of the recent legal disputes Apple has had with other smartphone developers. Nonetheless, there are certain changes that we should hope to see with the upcoming iPhone to help it take back the market, and it’s not Siri.
Bigger Screen
One of the things that has been holding Apple back in the market, and doing so has propelled Android based phones, is to add a larger screen. Recently, Android phones have been averaging around a 4.5” screen, while the newest Apple release, the 4S, it considerably smaller. With the increase in mobile entertainment apps like Netflix, Hulu, and DirecTV apps, consumers have demanded, and positively responded, to the release of larger screens. The Apple iPhone 5 is going to have to implement this as well if they plan on staying as competitive as they can in the market. A lot of Apples fans have been holding back for this feature, and let us hope it pays off.
4G Capable
4G abilities have been on the market for a couple of years now, and a lot of phone makers have answered that call with making 4G capable phones. The iPhone has still been behind on this trend, keeping them in the back seat of the competition. If Apple really wants to pull non-Apple fanatics to their side, they need to offer a product that can keep up with the latest in mobile development. If Apple can do this, then they can expect to see more people jumping on the iPhone bandwagon, and the hold out will be worth it. Verizon and AT&T already have these high speed networks, and both support Apple products, and Sprint is on its way to become 4G capable. With this trend quickly growing, Apple needs to play catch up.
More Durable
While the most recent iPhone 4S was a beautiful design, the glass had a tendency to break. This is inconvenient and expensive to fix, and Apple needs to remedy this. Hopefully, they will opt to not focus on making a thinner phone, where durability will most likely be compromised, or cheaper plastics materials will affect the aesthetic that Apple is known for. It seems that most mobile technology developers are opting for thinner and/or lighter designs, which in the end compromise some other aspect of the phone in order to keep it durable and affordable. Apple needs to not play into the arms race of having the thinnest phone because they have bigger issues to face. Not to mention, most cell phones are thin enough as is, and going thinner will only provide minimal results.
So these are the main areas that Apple needs to improve in order to get back to the top in the mobile market. It is very exciting to get to see what direction that Apple went in for their upcoming release, and regardless, it will not disappoint. Apple has a proven record of delivering some of the best gadgets in the world, and the iPhone 5 will be no different. Regardless, they need to know where they stand in the current market, and focus on getting even better.
