SquirrelMail is a web-based email application written in PHP. SquirrelMail is built using plugin based architecture to accommodate additional features around the base application. Currently, over 200 plugins are available for the SquirrelMail application.
Out of these 200+SquirrelMail plugins in the inventory, following is a list 10 of SquirrelMail plugins which I have found noteworthy.
1) Compatibility
This plugin enables other plugins to access the functionalities required to make them backward and forward compatible with many of the versions of SquirrelMail which are in use. This eliminates the duplication of certain functionalities throughout many plugins. It also provides the functionality to check whether the plugins have been installed properly or not.
2) Quick Save
This plugin enables automatic persistence of messages as they are being composed. This prevents the accidental loss of messages due to technical problems such as browser and computer crashes.
3) Shared To-do Lists
This plugin provides options to create & maintain personal, public and shared To-do lists between the users of SquirrelMail. Assigning tasks to other people, setting the duration, owner and priority of the tasks are few of the many similar features offered by this plugin.
4) Mini SquirrelMail
This plugin allows the users to get some basic information about the new emails in their Inbox without opening the SquirrelMail window. The plugin pops up a window which allows them to see which folders have new mails, how many messages they have, the subject and sender of those messages.
5) Proon automatic folder pruning
This plugin can automatically delete the messages which are older than a certain date or to limit the size of a particular folder. The plugin can proon the messages during sign on & also at recurring intervals during a session.
6) Plugin Updates
This plugin checks for any updates to the currently installed plugins in the SquirrelMail site. It also gives a description of any recent changes to the plugin, if any. It provides information about the latest stable SquirrelMail version.
7) Message Flags & Icons
This plugin enhances the appearance of the SquirrelMail user interface. It attaches icons to new and read messages as well as to the messages which have been forwarded, replied, etc. This can help us to easily distinguish the different messages in the mailbox. This plugin also enables the users to flag their messages by providing Flag/Unflag buttons.
8) True-A-Day Daily Story
This plugin adds a daily story from the popular This is True website to the bottom of the login page. A signup box to subscribe to the This is True weekly e-mail newsletter will also be included at the bottom of the page.
9) Address book Import-Export
This plugin allows to import and export addresses from and to a comma-separated values (CSV) file.
10) TNEF Attachment Decoder
This plugin lets the users to open & extract attachments from ms-tnef encoded files. This plugin adds an extra view option to the available hyperlinks whenever a file of type ms-tnef is received.
